Motorcycle Maintenance : Centrestands

The main purpose of a centre stand is to assist you during maintenance work. The stand works to lift the back wheel off the floor and into an elevated position to allow for easier access to parts of the motorcycle that are harder to reach. Replacing your rear tyre for example, is difficult work without the use of a centre stand, especially for bikes that are rear-heavy.

A centre stand supports your motorcycle by holding it firmly in place. This makes working on it not only easier but safer as it prevents the bike from toppling over.

Storing a Motorcycle : Centrestands

Many people choose to put their bike away for the winter, where the use of a centre stand is essential for keeping it in the best condition possible. Not only does the stand help to keep the motorcycle in place, preventing it from falling over, but it physically lifts the tyres off the ground, keeping the weight off of them. The weight of your motorcycle will be better distributed in longer periods of storage, and the life of your tyres prolonged.

Centre stands are a space saver in a workshop or garage. Unlike a side stand (which holds the bike in a tilted position) the centre stand holds it upright, allowing for it to take up less room. This is also beneficial in busy cities where parking space can be an issue.

Using a Centrestand

Placing a motorcycle on a centre stand

A centre main stand from Wemoto

A centre stand should only be used on level ground. Simply put your motorcycle into neutral and stand to the left of it. Hold onto the left handle bar with your left hand, and the motorcycle seat or passenger handle with your right hand, using the bike’s side stand as a safety measure. Place your right foot and your body weight onto the lever on the centre stand and gently guide the bike until both feet of the centre stand are touching the ground and the side stand is no longer in use. Using your left hand to steady the bike, pull the bike backwards and onto the stand. Use your body weight to assist you but do not attempt to lift the bike!

Removing a motorcycle from a centre stand

To remove the bike from the centre stand gently push forward until the rear wheels comes off the stand and the motorcycle is again at ground level.
